Ranking System
In the past there were only two ranks white belt and black belt.  Now, however we have many different ranks and methods of identifying these ranks.

The rank you presently have is relative.  It should not concern you if you are an orange belt and you see a brown belt from another

style who is your inferior.  The same applies for ranking within your own school.  Rank is merely a method of keeping score with yourself.  The only thing that matters is that you strive to maximize the benefits you derive from studying karate.  An old karate proverb states "Rank follows the man"  If you are truly good, regardless of rank, people will notice.

Normally, at least 3-6 months time in grade is required for kyu rankings.  Slow learning is not poor learning your rate of learning will be an individual matter, for it is impossible to tell you how long it will take to achieve a specific proficiency.  It will depend on your ability, devotion, and time spent practicing.  Don't be discouraged if your progress seems slow, instead, concentrate on perfecting what you have already learned.

Eligibility for promotion in the Order of Isshin-Ryu is based upon the following requirements:

  • Moral character, attitude, and maturity.

  • These characteristics are observed by your teachers during your instruction periods and by the board of examiners during the testing period.

  • Technical proficiency:

  • Your skill in performing basic techniques and kata.

  • Competitive ability:

  • You do not have to compete in fighting matches, but we recommend it as a method of measurement for self-improvement.
